The Anchorperson and Bad News Essay -- TV Television Media Essays

The Anchorperson and Bad News Government policy and public opinion work on a two way street. Opinion reacts to policy; in turn, opinion shapes policy. Broadcast media speeds this game of table tennis to an even more personal and democratized level, often bypassing several filters as the information television provides streams into our living rooms. Print media lags and becomes increasingly visual - the bright colors and pictures of USA Today contrast the stark factual spreads of the Wall Street Journal. Television becomes an emotionally charged and urgent medium when the viewers can hear voice intonation and see facial features accompanying by the minute at the scene events. The figures at the fore of these transmissions are the television newscasters, familiar names such as Jennings, Brokaw and Rather, persons who have held the public's trust for two, perhaps three generations of viewers. I hope to explain the connection I see between television technology, public opinion, and foreign policy. I believe that technological factors such as television have disseminated more power to the masses in terms of the ability to receive information, but also has given power to those who relay it, namely anchor persons. I also take into account the role of the media in times of crisis, which is commonly to simply relay government information and policy instead of being a watchdog of it. Briefly summarizing author Bethami Dobkin, in terms of terrorism, television media reinforces government frameworks and rhetoric, and conveys them in a fast, but at the same time intensely personal way. The results increased popularity rating for Presidents. "The public has rewarded those presidents who have taken action and have seized center stage... ...rmation is national security. Obviously, journalists should not endanger lives to publish where the Navy SEALS will be landing. Television technology and its representatives do play a crucial role in this recent terrorist event. In one sense, we are more informed about happenings, but we are forced to see it through an unchallenged framework; one that prescribes drastic actions that many people are reticent to fully commit to before further exploration is done. Freezing out profits Synopsis Freezing out profits is an article that discussing on one company which is Cold Cuts Ltd (CC). The managing director for this company is Mr. Dali. It produces Singapore’s only refrigeration parts and specializing in it. He is the one that is responsible for all the decision making that need to be done in the company. CC was essentially a subcontractor of components for customers who were original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). This company not only faced competition from supplier that supply same product, but it was also on whether the customer should manufacture in-house on their own.The company developed its own product of refrigeration process technology known as Fuzzy Frost. Their product of Fuzzy Frost was exported worldwide. Two years ago, the company had a major development related to their product. They upgrade Fuzzy Frost to become Fuzzy Frost Alpha System which will enhance features in the refrigerator. One of the enhancements is, it wi ll enable perishable items to be stored far longer than conventional fridges. At the same time on the FFA product discover, the company open its second factory in China which product old Fuzzy Frost.CC had main customer in Singapore which known as Secconz which is a local customer and long-time partner. The Supplier Manager of Secconz is Mr. Nelly where in China; the Plant Manager is Mr. Rithisak. The company export their product worldwide include Europe country. There are two major problems that were faced by the company. Firstly, the problem is in term of the pricing in Singapore, with their long-time partner, Secconz. Secondly, it is the investigation on their export activities by United States International Trade Commission on their products in China.Decision Maker / Protagonist The decision maker or protagonist for this case on ‘Freezing out profit’ is Mr. Dali. He is the one that is responsible for the decision making done in the company. This is because; he is ma naging director for Cold Cuts Ltd. He will decide what to be done and what to not be done. Based on this case study, he needs to make big decision making. Firstly is related to their major customer in Singapore, Secconz. Secondly is related to their company in China related to the anti-dumping things.Problem faced by the decision maker / protagonist. The problem faced by the decision maker or protagonist in this case is related to the pricing of the products that were sold whether in Singapore or in China. Mr. Dali need to decide whether to reduce the premium price charged to Secconz or proceed taking the huge amount of profit because they already achieve payback on its investment in the new machinery within two years. He is also faced problem related to the anti-dumping law in China. Major Issue The major issues in this case study is between Cold Cuts Ltd. nd Secconz. Secconz is their major customer in Singapore. Secconz has requesting for the price reduction of FFA product. This i s because; CC still charged the same price after 2 years even though the investment in the new machinery on FFA component has already been recover. Despite of better quality FFA components and not burden by any overhead costs, Secconz still experience the huge margin from the sales price impose to them compared to sales price in Europe and USA. The supply manager from Secconz, Mr. Nelly asked for price reduction.He said that company may produce the technology by themselves if Mr. Dali did not want to reduce the price of FFA. Second major issues are related to the anti-dumping activities by China related to their product that produces over there. It was said that CC pricing products much lower than the fair value. It leads to the investigation made by the United States International Trade Commission whether to find CC was guilty or not. The effects are they might have to close down their business in China or levy with huge anti-dumping tax.

Letters of recommendation are a very important and essential requirement of your medical school applications. The number of letters of recommendation required depends on the medical school. Typically, schools ask for two to three letters of recommendation. These would all be great choices.   If it is an option, consider asking a pre-health advisor or pre-health committee to write a recommendation.   The purpose of the letter of recommendation is to provide a personal perspective, outline the narrative of your educational journey, and endorse your unique qualifications as a medical school candidate. It should help fill in any gaps to your story and soften any weaknesses or missteps. It is best to ask for a letter of recommendation about two to three months prior to the deadline for your AMCAS application. It is possible to submit the AMCAS application without having all your letters submitted. Be sure to note and meet the deadlines of the specific medical schools you are applying to and don’t let a missed letter deadline sink your application.   Asking for a letter of recommendation too far in advance might make it difficult for the recommender to remember. Asking too late may not give enough time for the recommender to write a quality letter. For individual letters of recommendation, you might ask in person, send an email, call, or even mail a cover letter and packet of information. If it has been a while since you last saw your recommender or were in his class, start with personal greetings and then briefly tell them what you have been up to and the reason for the request. Specifically note the deadline and if the letter is designated for a specific medical school you are applying to. If they express a willingness, ask if they need any source materials—such as a resume or curriculum vitae—and give them guidance as to the proposed length and format of the letter.   Once the letter is written and received, follow up with a thank you note. How Do I Submit My Letters of Recommendation?   You won’t be responsible for submitting the letters yourself. However, on the AMCAS application, you submit a letter entry for each letter you requested and include the contact information for the recommender. During submission, consider waiving your right to see the letter. Domestic violence is not a new phenomenon. It holds a long standing in Western culture and is an ongoing societal problem claiming millions of victims each year. Early approaches to domestic violence was constructed under the 19th century English common law, believing that under such laws a man was permitted to discipline his wife through physical punishment. Michelle Collins (2012), notes that in order to understand the impact society has on domestic violence or vice versa, it is important to define such violence. Domestic violence refers to patterns of abusive and threatening behaviours within a home which includes psychological, physical and emotional abuse. It is a distinct crime against the state, not only affecting the individual involved, but also affecting the community. Coles mainly concentrates on the interview process of selection for selecting new employees. Thus, this caused non-identification of all the attributes of the employees. Another issue identified from the recruitment approaches of Coles is the non-co ordination among the departments in the recruitment process. This causes non-identification of the requirements in the entire organization. Organizational culture process Coles is also having effective and positive organizational culture in place. This includes providence of training to the employees, communicating them with the organizational vision and having effective communication process in place (Hogan and Coote 2014). Coles is having online portal for all their internal stakeholders. This enables the lower level employees to communicate directly with the upper level management and convey their issues and grievances. On the other hand, it also helps the upper level management to convey their vision and strategies to their subordinates. Training and development program is being conducted periodically for the employees of Coles (Jehanzeb and Bashir 2013). This helps them to have equipped and trained employees in place and this also enables them to deal with the organizational challenges. However, one of the major issues identified in the existing organizational culture is the lack of having 360 degree feedback mechanism in place. This is identified in the existing organizational culture of Coles that internal stakeholders are not having the access to the 360 degree feedback system (Horng and Lin 2013). This is restricting in gaining knowledge and feedback from the employees regarding the organizational effectiveness. In addition, absence of having any 360 degree feedback system is also limiting the effectiveness of the employee appraisal process. It is one of the major gaps being identified in the existing organizational culture of Coles. Leadership approach Currently, democratic approach of leadership is being followed in the organization. This is identified by the way employees are involved in the organizational decision making process. The major positive factor in the existing leadership approach of Coles is gaining of opinion of the employees in the decision making process. Thus, customer service of Coles is also favorable in nature. This is due to the reason that the more will be the engagement of the employees, the more be the quality of the customer service. However, there are issues also being identified with the current leadership approach of Coles. Having only democratic leadership approach is reducing the competitiveness of Coles in their business operation. This is due to the reason that in the current competitive business scenario, democratic leadership approach will reduce the control and authoritative power of the upper level managers. Recommended steps There are some issues being identified in the existing approach of human resource management for Coles. The following sections will discuss about the recommended steps that should be initiated in order to overcome the identified gaps. It is recommended that Coles should also consider about the different methods for motivating the employees. This is due to the reason that providing only reward and benefits will not motivate all the employees. There are different and diverse needs for the employees that should be made in order to keep them motivated in their workplace. According to the Maslows need hierarchy theory; there are different types of need that should be fulfilled in order to have motivated employees in place. According to this theory, some of the major needs for the employees are the financial stability and safe and hygiene working environment. Thus, it is important for Coles to consider all these factors also in order to have motivated employees in place. Fulfillment of the needs of the employees will ensure that they will be motivated in their workplace and will be less dependent on the reward mechanism. The more effectively employees will get fulfilled; the more will be their engagement in the workplac e. It is also recommended that Coles should have situational style of leadership in place of their existing democratic style of leadership. This is due to the reason that having situational style of leadership will help Coles to have the flexibility in their managerial roles. In addition, initiation of the situational style of leadership will also help them in having different leadership approaches in accordance to the organizational situation. For instance, the competitive market scenario for Coles is requiring less complexities in the decision making process. Thus, with the help of the situational leadership, directional approach can be initiated in this case. Having effective style of leadership will help the managers to manage their employees in accordance to the organizational situation and thus employees will be better guided in different situations. This will also enhance the level of engagement of the employees. It is also recommended that 360 degree feedback mechanism should be initiated in the employee appraisal process of Coles. In addition, it is also to be considered that 360 feedback mechanism processes should cover all the stakeholders of the organization in order to make ensure that the feedback gained are diverse and from all the employees. The more effective will be the feedback process in the organization, the more effective will be the process of employee appraisal. In the case of the employee engagement, performance appraisal is important due to the reason that having diverse information in the appraisal process will ensure that employees will be appraised in accordance to their performance. It will create positive impression among the employees and will help in having more level of engagement in the workplace. Conclusion Thus, it can be concluded that the existing human resource practices of Coles are effective and efficient enough and it helps them in having motivated and engaged employees in the organization. However, this report identified different issues in Coles and recommended a few steps that will help in overcoming the issues identified in the existing human resources practices. Robert Edward Lee They say you had to see him to believe that a man so fine could exist. He was handsome. He was clever. He was brave. He was gentle. He was generous and charming, noble and modest, admired and beloved. He had never failed at anything in his upright soldier's life. He was born a winner, this Robert E. Lee. Except for once. In the greatest contest of his life, in a war between the South and the North, Robert E. Lee lost (Redmond). Through his life, Robert E. Lee would prove to be always noble, always a gentleman, and always capable of overcoming the challenge lying before him. Robert Edward Lee was born on January 19, 1807 (Compton's). He was born into one of Virginia's most respected families. The Lee family had moved to America during the mid 1600's. Some genealogist can trace the Lee's roots back to William the Conqueror. Two members of the Lee family had signed the Declaration of Independence, Richard Lee and Francis Lightfoot. Charles Lee had served as attorney General under the Washington administration while Richard Bland Lee, had become one of Virginia's leading Federalists. Needless to say, the Lees were an American Political dynasty (Nash 242). Lee's father was General Henry Light-Horse Harry Lee. He had been a heroic cavalry leader in the American Revolution. He married his cousin Matilda. They had four children, but Matilda died in 1790. On her death bed she added insult to injury upon Henry Lee by leaving her estate to her children. She feared Henry would squander the family fortune. He was well known for poor investments and schemes that had depleted his own family's fortune (Connelly 5). Henry Lee solved his financial problems by marrying Robert's mother Anne Carter, daughter of one of Virginia's wealthiest men (Nash 242). Henry Lee eventually spent his family into debt. Their stately mansion, Stratford Hall, was turned over to Robert's half brother. Anne Lee moved with her children to a simple brick house in Alexandria. Light Horse Harry was seldom around. Finally, in 1813 he moved to the West Indies. His self-exile became permanent, and he was never seen again by his family (Thomas). Young Robert had other family problems. His mother became very ill. At the age of twelve he had to shoulder the load of not only being the family's provider, but also his mother's nurse. When time came for Robert to attend college, it was obvious his mother could not support him financially. She was already supporting his older brother at Harvard and three other children in school. In 1824 he accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy. During his time at West Point Lee distinguished himself as a soldier and a student. Lee graduated with honors in 1829 (Nash 245). His graduation was dampened by a call to the bedside of his ailing mother. When he arrived home he found his fifty-four year old mother close to death. A death caused by struggles and illnesses of her difficult life. Robert was always close to his mother. He again attended to her needs until her death. On July 10, 1829, Anne Lee died with Robert, her closest son, at her side. Forty years later Robert would stand in the same room and say, It seems but yesterday that his beloved mother died (Connelly 6). While awaiting his first assignment, Lee frequently visited Arlington, the estate of George Washington Parke Custis. Custis was the grandson of Martha Washington and the adopted son of George Washington. After Martha's death Custis left Mount Vernon and used his inheritance to build Arlington in 1778. Arlington was set on a hill over looking the Potomac river and Washington D.C. (NPS Arlington House). Custis had only one daughter, Mary Anna Randolph. Mary had been pampered and petted throughout her life. Lee's Courtship with Mary soon turned serious, before long they were thinking of marriage. However, before Robert could propose he was assigned to Cockspur Island, Georgia. Robert returned to Arlington in 1830. He and Mary decided to get married. The two were married on June 30, 1831(Nash 248). Shortly there after the Lees went to Fort Monroe. Mary was never happy here. She soon went back to Arlington. Mary hated army life. She would, for the most part, stay at Arlington throughout the rest of Robert's time in the United States Army.
